Smoothies fill a special place in our heart.

In the transition to a low meat then no-meat and often vegetarian diets, we often experienced the dreaded ‘energy crash’ feeling from not getting enough protein in three, now smaller, meals. When your on-the-go, there are few options to get a nourishing plant-based meal. Having five small meals a day may be ideal, and advisable, but it’s often impractical for most working folks. Protein bars can be great but they lack a certain something.

Smoothies to the rescue. Making a delicious blend of fruits, vegetables and supplements is a great way to get a healthy dose of vitamins and nutrients and feel full when relying on lighter meals in between. With smoothies, like juices, you can keep adding and experimenting to find what works for you. Dropping in a bunch of liquid supplements, no problem. Mixing in some hot beverages, should work fine. Packing an all-day drink for the train, smoothie’s got you covered.

So smoothies solved an obvious whole in our diet based health strategy but we found we were always making the same recipe over and over. Like any monotonous act, and especially when it comes to eating, we feel off the smoothie horse and there came that inevitable ‘crash’ again. So we knew, we have to stoke the creative juices once more.

Like the leaves on the trees, why not change your smoothie with the season? What we’ve found is a few small changes go a long way. You won’t find a Pumpkin Spice smoothie below but it’s certainly a viable option. Pumpkin seeds are, after all, a great source of plant protein. We were looking for a simple twist that could take a tested recipe and make is feel, well, a bit more seasonal.

Here’s a recipe we love:

DBH Fall Power Smoothie (2 servings)

In a blender combine

    • 1 banana
    • 1 1/4 cup apple cider (Fall element 1; in spring we use cranberry and kefir)
    • dash of cinnamon & vanilla (Fall element 2; try different proportions or leave one out
    • 1 tbsp of organic Lemon Juice
    • 1/2 cup frozen or fresh berries
    • 1 1/2 cups water (or kefir)
    • 2 tsp Navitas Maca Powder
    • 2 scoops Jarrow Formulas Optimal Plant Protein

Blend to perfection and enjoy twice in a day as a snack and meal addition.

Maca is an on-the-rise superfood that’s a great addition to your smoothie recipe. It’s nutrient and vitamin dense, containing 4 alkaloids known to support the endocrine system. Alkaloids help us balance our body from its constant interaction with harsh pollutants and acidic foods. Maca has been used in indigenous Andean culture for 000’s of years. We also like the earthy baked flavor this ingredient lends to the smoothie, in a subtle way. You can buy Navitas Maca here Navitas Naturals Organic Maca Gelatinized Powder, 1 Pound Pouches

Finding a good plant protein can sometimes be tough. We like Jarrow’s combination of Hemp (the perfect food alongside honey!) Protein, Pea Protein, Brown Rice, Chlorella and White Chia Seed to provide a complete plant-based amino acid profile.
